The Advisory Board of the Women’s Center at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary has appointed the Rev. Dr. Maxine L. Thomas as the Center’s new Director. Thomas (pictured) will begin her work at the Center on February 1.

Dr. Thomas is an Ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and serves as Assistant Pastor with her husband, the Rev. Troy I. Thomas, Senior Pastor, at Quinn Chapel AME Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Thomas earned her Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and her Doctor of Ministry degree at Asbury Theological Seminary. She serves as Board Chair and Dean of the West Kentucky Conference of the AME Church Board of Examiners and is Executive Director and Founder of Sisters Keeping the Covenant, Inc., a ministry for the empowerment of women and girls.

A lifelong advocate for women and especially women clergy, Dr. Thomas has established national conventions for women, ranging in topics from HIV care and prevention to self-care in ministry and family life. In addition to her advocacy for women and her work as a minster, Dr. Thomas has experience in the classroom, instructing both undergraduates and graduates in comparative religion, theology and spiritual formation. She is the author of Woman, Dry Your Weeping Eyes, as well as of several women’s Christian devotional books.

“Rev. Dr. Thomas will be a great asset to the Center as well as the LPTS community, providing us with unique perspectives and experiences,” said Women’s Center Financial and Faculty Liaison the Rev. Dr. Johanna Bos. “Please join us in welcoming her to our community.”

About Ha_Qohelet

Ha_Qohelet is a transliteration of Hebrew definite article plus a feminine participle, all together meaning "the (feminine) one who assembles" or who calls together. Qohelet is the title of one of the books of the Hebrew Scripture, known in English as Ecclesiastes. The Women's Center at LPTS feels the epithet of Qohelet is a fitting one for what we do and are. The Women's Center is, indeed, a caller-together, a caller-to-wisdom, and an assembler -- of people, of ideas, of actions, and ultimately, we hope, of transformations in the world. In this context, Ha_Qohelet is the Director of the Women's Center, and Editor-in-Chief of Wimminwise.
